The 8-Week Moving Checklist for North Texas Families

A well-planned move is a calm move. Use this week-by-week checklist to stay ahead.

8 weeks out

  • Book your movers, especially for summer or month-end dates.
  • Start a moving folder for quotes, receipts and contracts.
  • Walk through each room and decide what to keep, sell or donate.

6 weeks out

  • Order boxes and packing supplies, or book a packing service.
  • Request school records and notify your child’s school.
  • Use up frozen and pantry food.

4 weeks out

  • Begin packing rooms you rarely use: guest rooms, garage, holiday decor.
  • Submit a USPS change of address.
  • Schedule utility transfers: electricity, water, internet and trash.

2 weeks out

  • Confirm your moving date and arrival window.
  • Reserve elevators or loading zones at both buildings.
  • Service your car if you are driving a long distance.

1 week out

  • Pack everything except daily essentials.
  • Pack an “Open First” box: sheets, towels, chargers, medications, snacks, toilet paper.
  • Defrost and clean the freezer if it is moving.

Moving day

  • Walk the crew through the home and point out fragile items.
  • Keep pets and children in a quiet room or with a sitter.
  • Do a final walk-through of closets, cabinets and the attic before the truck leaves.

First week in your new home

  • Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.
  • Update your Texas driver’s license address within 30 days, and register your vehicle in your new county if it changed.
  • Meet the neighbors and find your nearest urgent care and grocery store.
